lists upon lists

 Found a cache of my old notes from the turn of the century, and apparently I love a neatly-written list.  I've got 30 pages in half-sized, handwritten lists of 'Mechs that look like 'Mechs, variants to convert up or down a tech base, manufacturers, parts, simplified stats... they're not useful since everything's on computer now, but something about these is just pleasing to the eye.

@Alan_Nominus -

Groups of 'Mechs that look similar to each other - like the Emperor/Tai-Sho/Yu-Huang, or the Marauder lookalikes, for example. Generally clusters that can match each other with only 5-10 tons of modification.

I used to write everything in notebooks. Admittedly, I was in middle and high school and laptops were crazy expensive, and the concept of a netbook wouldn't even have been feasible, but I did.

Naturally, few of those notebooks have survived my lifestyle. The rest of them I have trouble deciphering. It's like someone else wrote random notes with no context for me to use.

Now I have a laptop and a desktop and I keep everything on my PCs. Of course, I don't seem to come up with as much stuff as I did when I was sitting through classes I didn't care about with nothing to entertain me but a notebook and a pencil.

I have little trouble deciphering my own scribblings (heck, I even remember writing some of 'em) but that's mostly because they either had no context or are iterations and permutations of things that went on for years.

That kind of creativity does seem to need a careful mix of boredom (and other factors, probably) that just vanishes when you achieve cable TV/internet.
